Self-Care Is More Than A Bubble Bath
May is here.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
As someone who has spent decades in the clinical psychology profession, I take that seriously. Mental health is not a buzzword. It is not a social media trend. It is the foundation of everything.
And part of mental health - a part we do not talk about enough - is the unglamorous, unsexy, often uncomfortable work of actually taking care of yourself.
Not the bubble baths. Not the face masks. Not the pretty self-care content that makes it look effortless.
The real stuff. The Pap smear you have been putting off for two years. The mammogram you keep rescheduling. The boundary you know you need to set but keep avoiding. The rest you refuse to take because resting feels like being unproductive. The hard conversation you have been rehearsing in your head for months. The therapy appointment you know you need but have not made yet.
That is real self-care. And it is one of the most powerful acts of self-trust there is.
What would it look like to actually choose yourself. Not perfectly. Not prettily. But honestly and consistently.
That is the question worth sitting with.
One more thing before I go. If your thoughts, emotions, or patterns are interfering with your daily life, therapy may be the right fit for you right now. That is not a consolation prize. That is the right kind of support for where you are. I take the distinction between coaching and therapy seriously. Coaching is not therapy. And if therapy is what you need, I am happy to help you find the right support.
If you are ready to move forward with coaching and done waiting for permission to choose yourself - you are exactly who I built this work for.
Welcome to May.
xo, Denise
